The NFL and You!

This is a sponsored post by BlogHer and P&G.

When I was a kid I would fall asleep watching football with my dad on Sunday afternoons. The Redskins was his team. I have a lot of memories about the Redskins. My great-grandmother liked the Redskins too. And the Houston Oilers (now known as the Houston Texans for the young folk). Football is in my genes.

I've mentioned before how I love football. I love playing it and I love watching it. Sadly, the only NFL team with a band is not my favorite team. Although now they have McNabb. We'll see how that goes.

My favorite team changes with the players. The Vikings had my attention for awhile, but now Randy Moss has moved on. I know, I know, he has some problems off the field, but have you seen his hands?

And Michael Vick? I know he isn't a favorite of PETA, but he's got some skill.

For me, it's not so much who is playing, but that football is on. Doesn't matter the day, either. Saturday, Sunday, Monday. It's all good.

The only things that make football better is: family, food and friends. And the only prep necessary is some serious food. Only good stuff here. Sometimes it's artichoke dip, sometimes taco dip, and sometimes it's cocktail meatballs. But whatever it is, it's special and fun.

Recently we had some friends over to share in the fun. Here are the kids eating their snacks at the table (in full view of the tv).

And the boys hanging out:

Heart Necklace Giveaway

UPDATE: The winner is in! # 18 Lis is the winner. The gals at Artisan Design Gallery will ship you your very own heart necklace. Look for it in the mail soon!

Thanks everyone for commenting. Look for another giveaway in a few weeks.

This was in my mailbox when I checked my mail on Wednesday. There's something in it for you too!

The gals at Artisan Designs Gallery were kind enough to send me a sweet little red heart necklace. Since Ryan's diagnosis two years ago (yikes, two years as of the end of August), hearts hold a different significance for me. I used to think of love and romance, now I think of heart defects.

I love the simplicity of this necklace. How it can be dressed up or worn every day with jeans and a t-shirt.

The best part of this gift is that Artisan Design Gallery is giving one of these babies (the heart, not Ryan) to one of my lucky readers. All you need to do is go to Artisan Design Gallery's website and sign up as a follower of their site. Make sure to come back and tell me you did so in the comment section of this post.

For an additional entry, become a Facebook follower and come back here and comment a second time telling me you did so. I will leave the giveaway open until Sunday, October 3 at 8 p.m. EST and post the winner on Monday, Oct. 4. Random.org will do the selection.

Please, please, please leave me your email so I can contact you if it's not linked with your profile.

Now get going so you have a chance to sport a matching one of these:

Sweet Mandolin

A few weeks ago, CSN stores sent me this little baby to play with.
Jaccard Safe Hands Mandolin in ABS - 200421

It's a Mandolin... and is supposed to slice veggies easily and uniformly. I was excited to see a tomato blade. I tried it out recently for a cookout we had recently. I took these beautiful tomatoes....

and made them into this...

NOT GOOD! In fact here is what I did by hand...

Ahhh! That's better.

It worked better with the onions...

But the real reason I was excited to try this mandolin was to use it to slice sweet potatoes for a sweet potato bake my friend gave me the recipe for a year ago. Who wants to slice sweet potatoes?

I'm not sure if it was user error, but I found it extremely difficult to slice the potatoes. I guess I was expecting raw potatoes to suddenly be easy to slice with the newfangled device.

It wasn't. However, it took a lot less time to get this pile of sliced sweet potatoes than it would've taken me to do by hand. And the sweet potato bake was delish so for now it works.

The end of the story on my mandolin experience is that it works well with the right foods - can't be too firm and can't be too mushy.... it has to be a soft yet firm food.... like a cucumber!
