Win a Walgreens $100 Gift Certificate!

I'd heard a lot about Walgreens but had never really gone because I’m a creature of habit. I started going to another drug store in town when we moved here 12 years ago and never switched when the Walgreens went in three years ago. So when they offered the chance to review some of their store brand Health and Wellness products I jumped at the chance. For this review I chose things our family uses every day: band-aids, toothpaste and toothbrushes.

Product numero uno - Band-Aids:

The girls use band-aids all the time even when they don’t need them so to be able to buy the store brand instead of a national brand is a great way to stretch our budget. I knew I couldn’t use the girls as reliable test subjects. Instead I put a Walgreens fabric band-aid on my left hand and Johnson & Johnson band-aid on my right to see which one would surrender first.

I washed my hands several times without the band-aids coming loose. I was impressed. Then came the ultimate test – a shower. They both did great the first few minutes. However when I went to wash my hair the Walgreens band-aid came loose and slipped off my finger when I squeezed the shampoo bottle. Johnson & Johnson was still hanging on.

I was disappointed at first, but then I realized the Johnson & Johnson band-aid might have an advantage since it was on my right hand – I’m left handed. So I squeezed the conditioner bottle with my right hand. Sure enough the Johnson & Johnson band-aid slipped right off.

The verdict: Walgreens band-aids stay on as long as the national brand.

Next up: Dental Hygiene

I chose the toothpaste and toothbrushes because the national brands can be so expensive compared to store brands. I paid $1.50 for this toothpaste and 2.99 for two toothbrushes.

It’s hard to gauge in a couple uses whether your toothpaste is whitening your teeth effectively or fighting cavities and gingivitis. All I have really have to talk about is the taste and consistency so hold onto your seats for this thrilling subject.

The toothpaste was a little bland, but I think it’s because I forgot to get the minty fresh kind. … It was the same consistency as the national brand we always use though and my teeth felt clean afterward. Next time, I will try the mint flavor as this was more like brushing with baking soda and water.

Last, but not least: The Toothbrush

I love the feeling of a fresh new toothbrush and these Walgreens brushes did not disappoint. I bought the medium stiffness and couldn’t tell a difference between my usual toothbrush and this one (except this one didn’t have stale toothpaste crusted down between the bristles).

After having tried these products, I wouldn’t hesitate trying other Walgreens brand products. The three I chose operated and lasted just as long as my more expensive national brand products.

What I love even more is that Walgreens donates a percentage of profits made by the purchase of Walgreens Brand Health & Wellness products to the Walgreens Way to Well Fund, a fund that brings preventive wellness services and education to local communities.
